Orissa violence: 45,000 Christian institutes shut in protest

Nearly 45,000 schools, colleges and other educational institutes run by Christian organisations around the country were closed on Friday to protest the continued violence against the community in Orissa.

“All our schools and colleges are closed today (Friday). Let me clarify, survival is more important than education,” said Babu Joseph, spokesman of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI).

He said they are holding a peaceful protest to voice concern against continued violence against the community in Orissa, where at least 11 people have died in communal violence since Saturday evening.

“There is almost an ethnic cleansing in the state,” Joseph told IANS.

Orissa has been on the boil since Saturday when Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, a member of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), and four others were killed at his Jalespata ashram in Kandhamal district.

His killing triggered violence in the state against the Christian community by some Hindu groups.

Joseph said there are around five million students studying in these 45,000 institutions and this protest will certainly bring spotlight on the issue.

He said their community members have carried out protest marches across the country.

In Delhi scores of Christians marched to Orissa Bhawan, the office of the state resident commissioner, to protest the violence. Several schools and colleges like St. Stephens College, St Columba's School and Somerville School were closed for the day.

“Our teachers told us on Thursday that our school is closed on Friday,” said Astha Singh, a student of Somerville School in east Delhi.

Similarly institutions run by missionaries in Shimla, Dharamsala and Dalhousie towns in Himachal Pradseh remained closed.

“The college is closed to express solidarity for the violence victims," said Shimla's St. Bede's principal Sister Melba.

A group of Christian leaders had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday and appraised him about the situation in Orissa. Joseph said the prime minister had assured them the government would “take all steps to bring peace and normalcy”.

In Kerala, around 5,900 educational institutions remained closed. The institutions in Kerala included four medical colleges and 11 engineering colleges run by the Catholic Church.

Other Christian denominations like the Church of South India (CSI) and Marthoma Syrian Church joined the protest against the violence.

“All those attending our institutions will attend work wearing black badges," said an official of Marthoma Church at its headquarters in Thiruvalla in Pathanamthitta district.

From today shoot at sight order for miscreants in Kandhamal districts. As large number of rigt wing hindu fundamental groups like VHP and Bajrang dals are targeting innocent christian families. Large numbers of villages, prayer halls, churchs are completely burned. Already 10 peoples were killed in the aftermath of violence.

Violence is rampant in all the villages in Raikia, G Udayagiri, Baliguda, Tikabali blocks.

"We have issued shoot at sight order in the wake of largescale violence in some curfew-bound areas of Kandhamal district," Revenue Divisional Commissioner (southern division) Satyabrata Sahu said over phone.

The order was issued after a large number of people armed with sticks and crude weapons defied curfew restrictions and indulged in arson and violence in several places between Baliguda and Udaygiri, he said.

Widespread violence also took place in Raikia area where two persons were critically injured in an attack by a mob, said Sahu, who has been camping in the communally-sensitive district.

The residence of former director general of police John Nayak was attacked by a mob at Raikia, he said adding that the administration has received information about a large number of families from Raikia taking shelter in forest areas.

A pregnant woman, whose husband works in Bhubaneswar, has also fled to forest along with some family members, her relatives said.

Though unconfirmed reports put the toll at 14, officials confirmed nine deaths in the violence after the killing of Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Laxmanananda Saraswati on Saturday night at Jalespeta in Tumudibandh.

With continued violence sparked by the killing of VHP leader Laxmanananda Saraswati claiming nine lives in Orissa, more forces were sought for deployment in the communally-sensitive Kandhamal district.

"Though tension prevails in Kandhamal, the situation is improving gradually. Security forces have been able to enter inaccessible areas by removing obstacles placed by miscreants," DIG R P Koche told PTI over phone.

Several roads including that connecting Raikia and Udaygiri have been cleared, facilitating speedy and smooth force movement, he said adding that the situation in towns and urban centres came under control, while remote and inaccessible areas still remained trouble-prone.

In a bid to further step up security, as many as 12 platoons of Orissa State Armed Police were being requisitioned for deployment in tension-hit areas, Revenue Divisional Commissioner (southern division) Satyabrata Sahu said.

As Kandhamal remained on the boil, curfew continued in all major towns of the district, while prohibitory orders under Section 144 were in force in the entire district, to prevent outside elements from entering the area, he said.

In order to review the situation in the tribal dominated district, Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal is scheduled to visit Kandhamal shortly, sources said.

A large number of people from areas like Raikia, Rupagaon, Chakappada, Tikabali and Tumudibandh have fled and took shelter in forests, the sources said.

As Rapid Action Force, the Central Reserve Police Force and the Orissa police force were deployed in all sensitive areas of Kandhamal, security personnel held flag marches in some places, sources said.

While four persons were killed in a bloody clash and exchange of fire between two groups at Barakhama on Tuesday, three others died in Raikia area after their houses were set afire around mid-night on Monday.

Another person was burnt to death at Rupagaon in Chakapada area during the 12-hour state-wide bandh called by saffron outfits on Monday.

Forces attempting to curb the escalating violence in Orissa

An indefinite curfew was today (August 26), clamped in Orissa's communally-sensitive Kandhamal district following fresh violence in the wake of the killing of VHP leader in which three persons were killed.

"We have information about death of three persons in Raikia area. The details are being collected," Revenue Divisional Commissioner of Southern Division Satyabrata Sahu told. "The situation in Kandhamal district is very tense but under control," he added.

The three persons died of asphyxiation after their houses were torched midnight last night, police sources said.

With the fresh deaths reported from Raikia, the toll in violence triggered by the gunning down of Laxmanananda Saraswati and four others on Saturday night rose to five, official sources said, adding two persons, one each in Kandhamal and Bargarh were burnt to death yesterday during the 12-hour statewide bandh.

Indefinite curfew was imposed in almost all parts of the tribal-dominated Kandhamal district including Phulbani, Tumudibandh, Baliguda, Udaygiri, Nuagaon and Tikabali as a precautionary measure and to bring the situation under control, he said.

Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel were deployed in several sensitive areas of the district while schools, colleges and educational institutions remained closed, he said.

A large number of houses and churches were torched by irate mob in several areas including Nuagaon, Raikia, Udaygiri, Phiringia and Baliguda, police said.

BHUBANESWAR: Rail and road traffic was disrupted across Orissa on Monday and thousands of people staged demonstrations in several places as part of a statewide shutdown called by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) to protest the killing of a leader of the organisation on Saturday.

"Train services have been affected across the state," JP Mishra, spokesperson of the east coast railway, said. "Neither passenger nor goods trains were allowed to move from stations."

Road traffic was also badly hit and many vehicles were attacked. "Protesters damaged at least five vehicles - two in Rourkela and three in the coastal district of Balasore," a police official said.

Thousands of protesters staged demonstrations and burnt tyres in several villages, towns and on national highways. Almost all shops and petrol pumps remained closed.

Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, a member of VHP's central advisory committee, and four other people were killed at his Jalespata ashram, some 340 km from here, Saturday evening after more than 30 suspected Maoist rebels opened fired on them. The ashram is in Kandhamal district.

According to Director General of Police Gopal Chandra Nanda, the attackers used "sophisticated rifles and AK-47".

Saraswati was leading a campaign against cow slaughter and religious conversion in the communally sensitive Kandhamal district. The district, with a population of around 600,000 including 150,000 Christians, has witnessed numerous clashes between Hindus and Christians in the past.

Saraswati's supporters have been holding protests since Saturday night, blocking trains and vehicles.

On Sunday, at least three prayer houses were burnt by a mob in Kandhamal and a police outpost was attacked. Ten houses in Rupagaon village were also set on fire.

The state government on Sunday ordered a judicial probe into the killings and announced compensation for the victims. Authorities also constituted a special police team to investigate the crime.

BHUBANESWAR: As tension continued to prevail in most parts of Orissa following the killing of Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Swami Lakshmanananda and four others in Kandhamal district on Saturday, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident.

Mr. Patnaik, who held a review meeting at the secretariat, condemned the attack in which the religious leader and his disciples were killed by suspected naxalites. “Those guilty will be dealt with stringently,” he said.

The Chief Minister also announced an ex gratia amount of Rs. 2 lakh to the next of kin of those killed.

Mr. Patnaik appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony among different sections.

Although the police launched a combing operation in the region, there was no trace of the attackers till Sunday evening.

Tension started building up in many parts of the State by Saturday midnight when news of the killing spread. The activists of the VHP, Bajrang Dal and allied organisations blocked roads at several places.

Protests continued on Sunday and tyres were burnt and vehicles damaged. Two prayer houses were attacked in Kandhamal and Sundargarh districts.

A police outpost and few government offices were attacked in Kandhamal district even as prohibitory orders were imposed to maintain law and order.

KalingaTimes Correspondent
Bhubaneswar, Aug 24: Odisha government on Sunday ordered suspension of Kandhamal district Superintendent of Police Nikhil Kumar Kanodia as tension prevailed in many parts of the state following the killing of Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Swami Lakshmanananda.

The suspension ordered passed in the evening after criticism mounted on the government for the failure of the police to protect

the life of Swami Lakshmanananda and four others.

The Kandhamal district police had not been able to strengthen the security in the ashram of Swami Lakshmanananda despite his men informing the Tumudibandha police station about receipt of a letter with a threat to kill the Swami.

According to official sources, R.P. Koche, Deputy Inspector General (Southern Range), will remain in-charge of the police administration in Kandhamal district till the appointment of another officer as SP.

Kanodia was placed under suspension hours after a delegation of opposition Congress led by Leader of Opposition J.B. Patnaik and Pradesh Congress Committee president Jayadev Jena met Governor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare and submitted a memorandum seeking dismissal of the Naveen Patnaik Government.

The state government had utterly failed to maintain law and order in the state, Patnaik and Jena told reporters after meeting the Governor.

The government should step down for its failure to protect the life of Swami Lakshmanananda even after the police were informed about the threatening letter.

Earlier in the day, the authorities had suspended the Officer-in-Charge of Tumudibandha police station Madhusudan Jena Samanta for negligence in discharging his duties.

Indian Maoists kill Hindus over Christian conversions

BHUBANESWAR, India (Reuters) - Suspected Maoists killed a senior Hindu leader and four others in a remote eastern Indian village, an attack that police said may be linked to a controversy over religious conversions in the area.

Armed men raided a Hindu school in Orissa's rural Kandhamal district on Saturday and killed five people, including an octogenarian leader linked to India's main opposition Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The remote, forested region is a hotbed of religious tensions between hardline Hindus who accuse Christian priests of bribing poor tribespeople and low-caste Hindus to change their faith.

Christian groups say lower-caste Hindus who convert do so willingly to escape the highly stratified and oppressive Hindu caste system.

Tensions came to a head on Christmas Eve last year when fights broke out in which one person was killed and churches and temples were damaged.

The region is a stronghold of Maoist rebels and police say they have evidence to link the guerrillas to Saturday's attack.

"We have found a letter from the spot which indicates that it may be a Maoists attack," Kishan Kumar, the area's top government official, told Reuters, adding the automatic rifles used in the attack were similar to the ones used by the Maoists.

Police say by attacking Hindus the Maoists were trying to garner support among the region's poor tribes, most of which had converted to Christianity.

"There are instances where the rebels have threatened Hindu temples here," said Satish Gajbhiye, a senior police official.

The murdered Hindu leader was leading a local campaign to reconvert Hindus and tribal people from Christianity.

Saturday's killings have sparked tension in the area with hundreds of Hindus blocking roads and stopping trains. Thousands of policemen were deployed to maintain peace. Reports said one church was burned down by Hindu crowds.

India's constitution is secular, but most of its billion-plus citizens are Hindu. About 2.5 percent of Indians are Christians.

There have been attacks on Christians in the past in Orissa and other parts of India. In 1999, a Hindu mob killed Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two children by burning them in their car in Orissa.

Christians condemn violence, killing of VHP leader; Hope peace will be maintained in Orissa

New Delhi, August 24, 2008 (All India Christian Council)

The All India Christian Council is deeply concerned at the attack on an ashram near Tumudibandh in Kandhamal District of Orissa last night in which the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Lakshmanananda Saraswati and four of his associates were killed.

This is the latest in a series of attacks over recent months by political extremists, often called Naxalites or Maoist guerillas, which have left dozens of policemen and others dead in several districts of Orissa.

Dr. Sam Paul, aicc National Secretary of Public Affairs, said, “The Christian community in India abhors violence, condemns all acts of terrorism, and opposes groups of people taking the law into their own hands. We have had major differences with Mr. Saraswati, the deceased VHP leader. It was the hate campaigns of the Sangh Parivar which led to untold misery for Christians -- including the unprecedented violence last Christmas in Orissa. But we wish peace to everyone and urge everyone to follow the rule of law.”

According to media reports, the attack killed four people in addition to Saraswati. The attack involved shooting and hand grenade explosions. Saraswati was reportedly warned by the Maoists a few days prior to the incident to leave the area. (See CNN-IBN, “Naxals attack ashram, kill 5 key VHP leaders in Orissa”, Aug. 24, 2008, http://www.ibnlive.com/news/naxals-attack-ashram-kill-5-key-vhp-leaders-in-orissa/71990-3-1.html)

Dr. John Dayal, aicc Secretary General, said, “We are concerned at reports of communal violence in the last few hours against innocent Christians in nearby districts. We’ve heard that at least one prayer hall in Sudergarh was burnt, the van of some Catholic nuns was destroyed, and the sisters were injured. We urgently appeal to the Chief Minister, the Governor of Orissa, and the Minister of Home Affairs Mr. Shivraj Patil to take whatever steps are required to maintain peace and harmony in all areas of Orissa, to prevent further attacks on Christians, and to arrest those responsible for the deaths of Saraswati and his associates.”

Dr. P.R. Parichha, aicc Orissa state president, said, “The situation in the district was slowly returning to normal. People were engaged in rebuilding houses and settling down after a horrifying experience over Christmas 2007. Now we are afraid that the death of Saraswati will further destabilise the situation in the communally-sensitive Kandhamal district. The aicc will continue to work for peace in Orissa, one of the most undeveloped states in the country.”

The All India Christian Council (www.aiccindia.org), birthed in 1998, exists to protect and serve the Christian community, minorities, and the oppressed castes. The aicc is a coalition of thousands of Indian denominations, organizations, and lay leaders.
