Taking a serious note of the attacks on Dalit and tribal Christians in Orissa, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has decided to a send a team to Kandhamal area of the state to assess the situation.
The NCSC team, which will be headed by its Chairman Buta Singh, will examine cases of atrocities against Dalit Christians and also assess the steps taken by the state government to safeguard life and property of the minorities.
The Commission had earlier sought a detailed report from the state's Chief Secretary on the communal violence there after the killing of VHP leader Luxmananda Saraswati on August 23.
A week ago, the Orissa government apprised the Commission of the background of the violence and the measures taken by it to control communal clashes and compensate victims.
However, as the complaints kept pouring in, the Commission decided to carry out an on the spot enquiry. Moreover, a dozen organisations approached the Commission drawing its attention to the plight of Scheduled Caste members among Christians after the communal flare-up.
Earlier, a one member team of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) visited the state.
"We would also seek a member from NCM in our team as the enquiry will focus on violence against Scheduled Castes from the minority Christian community," an NCSC official said.
